On 11 February 1929, during the pontificate of Pope Pius XI, the “Lateran Pacts” between the Holy See and Italy were signed in the Hall of Honour at the Lateran Palace. It marked the first time since the unification of Italy that normal bilateral relations were established between Italy and the Holy See. The agreements recognized the independence and sovereignty of the Holy See, and at the same time, they marked the official “founding” of Vatican City State. For the 90th Anniversary of the Lateran Pacts and the foundation of Vatican City State a 2 euro commemorative coin deciding to represent on the coin the portrait of Popo Pio XI in the background of the Lateran Palace.
