First coin: The City on the Edge of Forever
This coin design recreates a key scene from the 1967 Star Trek episode, The City on the Edge of Forever. Vibrant colour brings to life the engraved image of Captain James T. Kirk (played by Canadian actor William Shatner) and Mr Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy); both in their famous Starfleet uniforms, they stand among the ruins before the oversized, ring-shaped entity known as
The Guardian of Forever. Augmented reality technology enhances the overall design, recreating the illuminated qualities of the time-travelling portal that is an object of wonder. Engraved in a special
Star Trek font is the word “CANADA”, the face value “20 DOLLARS” and the year “2016”.
Second coin: Mirror, Mirror
This coin design recreates a key scene from the memorable 1967 Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror. Selective colour enhances the engraved image of an alternate version of Mr. Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy) performing a Vulcan mind-meld on Dr Leonard “Bones” McCoy (portrayed by DeForest Kelley). McCoy bears a fearful expression while Spock sports an uncharacteristic goatee and altered uniform—evidence that the away team is in a mirror universe where their fellow crewmembers are behaving very differently. Engraved in a special Star Trek font is the word “CANADA”, the face value “20 DOLLARS” and the year “2016”.
Third coin: The Trouble with Tribbles
The coin design recreates a key scene that has remained a fan favourite, even beyond the Star Trek community. Selective colour brings to life the engraved image of Captain James T. Kirk (portrayed by Canadian actor William Shatner) in his green Starfleet uniform. He stands half-buried in a pile of small, furry creatures known as Tribbles, which have fallen out of an overhead compartment. Engraved in a special Star Trek font is the word “CANADA”, the face value “20 DOLLARS” and the year “2016”.
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in its own Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a graphic beauty box.
